The ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund (SIF) is one of the largest private impact funds in the Netherlands and invests in growing companies that have a positive impact on climate and society. With a commitment of EUR 500m, funded and managed exclusively by ABN AMRO, it invests through direct equity investments in early-stage growth companies and works with its portfolio companies to realise their fullest impact and financial performance.

Project description

Since 2022, Impact Institute has partnered with SIF to conduct Impact Due Diligences (IDDs) of promising investment opportunities. In each IDD, the following activities were performed:  

• Qualitative expert review of a company’s impact strategy, business model and governance through the evaluation of a company’s Theory of Change and development of impact pathways and KPIs.  

• Assessment of impact risks in line with industry standards to identify potential unintended consequences and develop mitigating measures. 

• Quantitative impact assessment for the most material positive impacts – including a validation of future impact potential– in line with the Impact-Weighted Accounts Framework (IWAF). Also included is a data-readiness exercise to prepare SIF and the potential portfolio company for periodic impact measurement and reporting.

Each IDD delivered a summary report with detailed insights of the analyses and resulted in an overview of findings and actionable recommendations for the short-, medium- and long-term.  

Benefits to the client

Our collaboration complimented SIF’s commercial and legal due diligence processes by providing a thorough analysis of a company’s future impact potential and associated risks. Including an impact due diligence in the pre-deal investment process allowed SIF to make better-informed investment decisions, construct a more impactful portfolio and directly use insights post-deal to work together with its portfolio companies to realise their impact potential.
