De Fruitmotor – Nature-inclusive regional accounts Rivierenland
Client
Foundation Biodiversiteit en Landschap De Fruitmotor
Project partner
We conducted an exploratory study into nature-inclusive regional accounting for the Rivierenland region: a practical decision-making framework through which the value of nature and ecosystem services can be given a structural place in regional development, decision-making, and financing.
The exploratory study was carried out in the context of the Regio Deal Rivierenland II, in which regional partners are working together towards a future-proof region and broad prosperity. The findings are based on interviews and design sessions with stakeholders, as well as an analysis of existing methods and initiatives. Together, they form an initial development direction: a framework that helps guide next steps, without fully defining them in advance.
Project description
Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) is one of the founders of monetary valuation of ecosystem services and natural capital. With the development of the Ecosystem Services Valuation Database and studies such as Make Nature Count, FSD has not only provided insights into ecosystem services but also into their integration into scenario’s and decision making. Furthermore, FSD has experience in the application of this approach in regional/landscape contexts, such as their collaboration around Landgoed De Wielewaal in which they made the value of nature in an urban environment visible.
Outcomes
The report and the accompanying cover note provide development paths and action perspective for policymakers, regional partners, knowledge institutions and financiers who are involved in regional development, and who can play a role in the development and application of nature-inclusive regional accounts for Rivierenland as a shared framework supporting decision making in regional challenges.
