Completed Impact Assessment Demonstrates Timber’s Environmental Advantage in Circular Construction

Amsterdam, 4 March 2026Following the completion of the Valckensteyn built environment project in Rotterdam, Impact Institute conducted an impact assessment comparing timber and concrete shell-structures.

Our analysis shows that, even at this early stage of adoption, timber construction delivers significantly lower environmental costs. In the case of Valckensteyn, the hidden environmental costs of a timber structure are approximately 60% lower than those of a concrete alternative using the True Price method.

These findings highlight the importance of considering circularity in decision-making. By accounting for environmental impact in monetary terms, more balanced and future-proof investment choices can be made in the built environment.

We are proud to contribute to advancing transparent, impact-driven insights that support the transition towards a more sustainable and circular construction industry.
