TEEB – Impacts of animal protein production
Impacts of animal protein production
Client
TEEB is a scientific organization that wants to make explicit the natural and social capital dependencies and externalities of production systems on ecosystems to all involved stakeholders.
Project description
The study focused on the largest producer countries of animal protein such as the Netherlands and Brazil and countries with vulnerable and rich ecosystems such as Indonesia and Tanzania. A variety of production systems and products, from pastoralism to intensive agriculture and beef, poultry and milk products. The project involved quantifying impacts such as water pollution, land use, and climate change in a bottom-up analysis by WUR and monetizing in a top-down analysis. Impact Institute* was responsible for aligning quantification and monetization methodologies, developing a new methodology for water dependency valuation and finally analyzing different animal husbandry land-use scenarios in the case study of Maasai steppe in Tanzania.
Benefits to the client
The results of the study enable TEEB to have a comprehensive overview of animal husbandry impacts around the globe for the most critical production systems. This will be connected in the future with positive impacts or value creation of these systems to determine trade-offs while satisfying global demand for animal protein. The Maasai steppe case study demonstrates an innovative approach to analyzing trade-offs between different animal husbandry production systems taking into account ecosystem services and negative as well as positive impacts on natural capital.
