Ministry of Economic Affairs – Externalities in supply chains
Client
The Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Netherlands is among others concerned with agricultural supply chains. In a response to a publication by the Scientific Council for Government Policy, the Ministry wished to gain deeper insight into economic, environmental and social externalities of five food supply chains.
Project description
Impact Institute, together with Wageningen University and Research Centre, conducted both qualitative as well as quantitative research on the externalities in the food product supply chains of cocoa, milk, processed beef, potatoes, and green beans.
An important analysis is the identification of material environmental, social and economic externalities. Where possible, we quantified and valued relevant material impacts.
Benefits to the client
The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs received a systematic overview of the material externalities for five important food supply chains in the Netherlands. Since an order of magnitude was provided, the results can help the Ministry with the identification of priority areas to ensure the future sustainability and competitiveness of the Netherlands in the global food sector.
