Biodiversity Impact Measurement for Impact Investors: by Impact Institute

Explore a groundbreaking initiative as Impact Institute introduces a pioneering biodiversity impact dataset. This unique dataset provides impact investors with the tools to measure the impact on biodiversity within their portfolios, paving the way for the development of an international standard for assessing biodiversity loss in the financial sector.

Innovative Collaboration: Impact Institute has developed a cutting-edge biodiversity impact dataset, offering impact investors a comprehensive tool for measuring the impact on biodiversity at the individual company level.

Actionable Insights: By combining global datasets with company-reported information, investors gain actionable insights into the biodiversity impact of their investment and lending activities. The dataset provides a detailed understanding of impact drivers and their position within the value chain.

Value Chain Transparency: Utilizing Impact Institute’s value chain model, the dataset goes beyond traditional measurements, offering company-specific data on upstream and downstream impacts without double counting. This transparency enables investors to engage with companies, refine sourcing strategies, and make informed supplier choices.

Monetary Valuation: The dataset includes a monetary valuation of impacts, facilitating comparison with other impact themes and financial metrics. Investors can now quantify the financial implications of biodiversity impact, contributing to more informed decision-making.

Geospatial Land Use Model: Investors gain a comprehensive understanding of the biodiversity pressures, including climate change, air pollution, water pollution, and land use.

Impact Institute and Cardano jointly develop a unique dataset to help investors measuring biodiversity impact

Impact Institute and Cardano have joined forces to launch a pioneering biodiversity impact dataset. The data allows financial institutions to measure the impact on biodiversity of individual companies in their portfolios, paving the way to the next steps in the development of an international standard for measuring biodiversity loss in the financial sector.

GID: global impact database

“We are immensely proud of the successful launch of our groundbreaking dataset in partnership with Cardano. Together, we’re pioneering a new era of data-driven solutions for a more sustainable future”.

– Adrian De Groot Ruiz, CEO of Impact Institute

New insights into the biodiversity impact of companies.

By combining leading global datasets with company-reported information on their operations and production sites, the new biodiversity data allows investors to gain actionable insights into the biodiversity impact of their investment and lending activities. Using Impact Institute’s value chain model, the data provides not only a concrete understanding of what is driving such impact, but also a comprehensive picture of where it lies within the value chain (e.g., upstream or downstream), making it possible to identify who is responsible for it, engage with companies, and better define sourcing and supplier choices.

GID Biodiversity Asset data

GID Biodiversity Asset is a quantitative biodiversity impact database at company-level. Its underlying methodology, aligned with the TNFD LEAP approach and with the PBAF Standard, allows investors to identify biodiversity loss drivers and dive into specific portfolio constituencies to understand, report, and act on their negative biodiversity impact. The main features of the dataset include:

  • Company–specific value chain data, including upstream and downstream impacts without double counting
  • Monetary valuation of impacts, facilitating comparison with other impact themes and financial metrics
  • Geospatial land use model for 42 crops
  • Four main biodiversity pressures: climate change, air pollution, water pollution, land use
